As far as I know you cant tile on sealed concrete. The last time I faced a similar situation, I used a belt sander on the floor to scour the concrete. Then when it was dull we acid washed it. If you use this method be sure to get all the acid off the floor before attempting to tile! Mop it down 2-3 more times with clean water, and let it dry for a day or too. The other guys on here know thier stuff, maybe they can give us both advice!

Ceramic tile should not be installed over sealed concrete. The surface must be mechanically abraided prior to making any tile installation. Chemical strippers are specifically excluded. No typical acid readily available to the general public will have an effect on the sealer. Mechanical removal is the only way. Grind, sandblast, shotblast, etc.grin

Can I just do it the easy way and not have to strip anything? Just take the cement backer board for tile and screw it down to the concrete

I've never seen a beltsander work for this to any great degree but I suppose it isn't impossible.

Sorry - NO! It doesn't work that way.grin

If I strip the sealer or sand or grind it do I still have to have a backerboard or can I tile right over the concrete
