We recently bought a new home [well, new to us grin] The parents of several cats & dogs, one of the selling points of the house was that it has beautiful ceramic tile in every room.

My only complaint (other than the fact that we are down to one dinner plate because the floor is very unforgiving to anything dropped on it) is the fact that they are so very cold in the winter. I don't understand why the previous owners didn't plan ahead & install radiant heat under the tiles.

I don't suppose there has ever been developed any technology to install the radiant heating without destroying the floor?

We had the same problem (cold tile floors). I recently added "under-floor hydronic radiant heat" (PEX tubing, aluminum diffuser plates, reflective insulation, etc), and now the floors are VERY comfortable. The forced air furnace only runs when it is below zero outside. This approach requires that you have access to the underside of the sub-floor. A lot of work, but well worth it.
