Fireplace tile repair

Two 12" x 12" tiles around my fireplace were loose so I was able to pop them off without them breaking. I have a long list of DIY projects and need to make the simplest repair possible. There is drywall behind the tiles. When I removed the thinset residue, a few pieces of paper came off, minor damage, but is it safe to patch and put tiles back up? If replacing board is necessary, I will have to hire someone. My only concern is whether or not it would be a fire hazard.

is it safe to patch and put tiles back up? Yes. Use thinset mortar adhesive.
