waterproof membrane over sheetrock

Is there a way to put a water proof membrane over sheetrock, So I can then tile the backsplash area of my kitchen countertops without replacing the sheetrock with other backerboards etc?

If the sheetrock is in good condition you can tile straight to it, Red Gaurd serves no purpose on a backsplash only in wet areas and not over sheetrock.
