You should check with your local building inspection office where you live. We can't help you with that one. Know what I mean Vern?grin

Where on earth did you find 5 X 5 tile? Are you talking about ceramic tile?

I can tell you that cement backerboard should be used in my opinion.grin

I have a feeling the stove is in a corner and the area is 5'x5'.

How the floor and wall should be protected from high heat is entirely dependent on the stove itself. Just read the directions.

To decrease the clearance many stoves require a "ventilated" wall shield. You also of course need to check with your local building department for their requirements. Don't just do it, fires happen when directions are not followed.
