I have a condo in Florida built in 2003. The unit is on the 4th (top) floor. A few weeks ago I went to the unit and two rows of 16 inch ceramic tile were pitched at the grout line about 1-1. 5 inches at the grout line. Atile installer told me that all of the hollow sounding tile in the hall and virtually everywhere other than the center of the living room was loose as well. It appears that the tile was installed against the molding and cabinets, tub, etc. It does not appear that expansion or movement joints were used. The inspector felt that no cork insulator was used but that inspection only took place at the door entries to the bedrooms where he peeled th carpet back to look for something other than cement under the tile. The original builder and tile subcontractor have stated the hollow tile is not a problem. Is this possible? I am still waiting on a response from them. The inspector stated the only way to fix these issues is to remove ALL tile and start over. What is your opinion?

They are insane and trying to hide from a faulty job and responsibility for the cost to repair the premises.

Absolutely correct, there is no other way to fix it.grin

You can get an inspector from the tile industry to confirm the above if you feel like you want to pay for yet another inspection.grin

Not having cork would be a problem only for sound control. If cork was used the tiles will sound hollow. I stopped using cork two years ago. I can almost guarentee that cork was used. I've seen this problem mant times here in Florida condos. No expansion and poor installation of sound control and tile is your problem. The only way to fix this is to start over. DO NOT USE CORK. There are other products available like protecto wrap that maybe a little more expensive but are much cheaper than replacing the entire job. I agree with Bud that these guys are trying to skip out of their responsiblities. Where are you in Fla?
