Currently my harwoodfloor leading to the bathroom plywood floor are leveled. So to put in tarpaper and wonderboard and then tile would make the bathroom floor higher than the bedroom floor. How to solve this problem? I have read that its not advised to put tile over plywood I guess it would also be the water sealant issue. Suggestions? anyone?

Use Ditra or 1/4" CBU to keep the height down, then use a marble saddle or a wood threshold to match the hardwood, very rare the things line up exactly.

There are many ways to make these transitions look nice.

Hi Rd Tile,
Thanks but being a new home owner I am just starting to research. So can you specifiy what is CBU? Is this a different kind of wonderboard? Also are you suggesting I can just go ahead and tile on the plywood without removing it?
So based on research what I learned so far for bathroom floors:
1) apply thin-set mortar (recommend brands?)
2) put in cement board or wonder board (was suggested either one is fine)
3) crew down the board
4) place fiberglass mesh on seams.
5) draw in tile pattern
6) tile small area and wash as you go
7) wait for tile to dry then grout
8) wait for grout to dry then seal.

So does these steps sounds about right? Now I don't understand why for the shower wall you need tar paper but not on the floor?

Also doing the above steps would raise the bathroom floor probably 1/2 an inch and the transitions you talk about what materials are they?

As you can see I am very new and I could have gone the easy way and just buy stick on ones but they don't last anyways. But for such a small space I am being adventurous and want to try tiling.

Thanks,
Monkey

CBU is cement board underlayment. Personally myself I dont like Wonder Board on floors, try Hardi Backer.

You do not have to remove the plywood but you do need to add CBU or Ditra to except the tile.

The tar paper is a moisture barier.

If you use backer board it will raise the floor 1/2" with tile thats why Rd said you can use Ditra. Ditra is 1/8" thick.

The marble saddle is marble and wood threshhold is wood. There are many different transition materials you can use.

Thanks Rd and leasure,
I appreciate all your advise. I will research where they carry the hardi backer or Ditra since they don't seem to carry it in the shops where I am at. And I will also research on the transition materials. I just want a clean look and I already pick out the tiles they are all procelain.

Thanks again everyone and I will also assume the steps for tiling is ok to go just minor changes in the material use for the floor.

Thanks,
Monkey
