I've read a few articles online about removing ceramic tile and the different ways to do it. Does anybody have any idea on how long it will take?

Background information on the job, the tile is poorly laid ceramic with more than a few tiles making 'popping' sounds when walked on. There is Hardiboard type material below the tile and I don't believe it was screwed down, but rather mortared to the floor. Also, the sub-floor is wood.

I've read about a few different ways to remove this stuff. It seems like a sledge hammer and a rented scraper might be the simplest/quickest. Agree or disagree? We are planning on removing about 500 square feet from one area, 50 square feet from another, and 50 square feet from a third area.

Estimates on the time it will likely take for two hardworking guys to accomplish this would be appreciated as we will need to basically complete this job and start putting down a new floor over the weekend.

There's no way to predict the exact amount of time this would take. I've ripped out 1000 feet in a day, by myself. I've also seen 100 feet take me over a day.

Ok, that actually does give me a good estimate though. I would imagine if you could take out 1,000 feet in a day by yourself then two people should be able to take out little under 500 feet of poorly laid/poorly attached tile with the help of a power scraper.

If the hardi is thinsetted down and screwed down good friggin luck with that one my friend. My guess is about 100 sq a day like marco saidgrin
