Great site! Have determined that whoever installed the ceramic tile floor in our century house used luan over the tile/plywood floor. Leaks from the dishwasher destroyed the luan and the tiles are loose and broken. We also have a 1/2" valley in the middle of the area (approx. 2' x 3'). Can we repair and build up the area with thinset mortar or concrete board? Thanx, Brian

Once you remove the tiles, all the underlayment and get down to the subfloor, I'm sure you can fix the floor to remove that valley.

Let us know what you find once you're there.

We'll also need to know how the subfloor system is built and with what type & size lumber.

Brian,

Thinset isn't generally recommended for such a repair but we can get you on track after you get to the point Jazman has suggested above.
