On TLC (The Learning Channel) today there is a show called Holmes on Homes. It is about a shower install gone very bad and when I saw it I pictured Bud, Jazman, Rd Tile and all the other professionals are a lot like Mike Holmes.

His motto is make it right.

A very interesting hour that might help folks understand what can go wrong. The shower uses the Kerdi system in the rebuild.

I've watched it a few times and if you watch it from when he first began to now you'll se a big differance as to his methods for installing tile. One of his early shows had an outside tile company doing the install on the floor on a diaganol and the floor looked horrible. They didn't use a chalk line or at the very least spacers. They just started in the corner. They took a tile, cut it in half on the diaganol, then cut that in half for the corner cut. The grout joint spacing was all over the place as well as crooked lines. The other thing that he does is he just about guts the house because everything in the construction of it is wrong. That's easy to do when the homeowner doesn't have to pay a dime for anything, but try that in a real customers house and they would throw you out. Heck it's hard enough just trying to convince the customers to pay for the job to be done correctly so they don't throw good money after bad.

Don't get me started on that guy! Ole "sledgehammer Holmes" may have changed his ways over the years, but I doubt it.grin When that show began he was one of the biggest "hacks" on the North American continent.sad

I've actually never seen one of his shows. All I know is what I've heard from several of our Canadian tile-setter friends. They agree with Bud and Stan, claiming he has little knowledge on how things should be done.

I understand that now he is using Kerdi and Ditra however. At least he's learning how to use superior methods lately.

So he's on TLC? OK, now that I have cable in my office, maybe I'll check it out soon? When is the show on?

If THAT'S not the understatement of the year!

Darn. Is he that bad? Is he worse than Tim Carter? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zzq5AGa2PTI How can anyone be dumber than Tim Carter when it comes to ceramic tile installation?

I've seen that particular video before. Isn't that "treated plywood" he is getting ready to install tile on? And his recommendation to use Varathane to seal the plywood first? This guy has never heard of any of the rule books that pertain to ceramic tile installation.

Just for those that don't know any better and get a look at this guys videos, what he is suggesting IS NOT approved by the Tile Council of North America as far as I know.

Tim Carter needs to attend a few tile installation classes and check his "video making ego" at the door when he arrives.grin

Atleast Carter's so numb that you can TELL he has no idea what he's doing. Holmes knows just enough to be dangerous. He SOUNDS like he knows what he's doing.

That is exactly my point with being critical when it comes to those guys. The unknowing public soaks that crap up just like the information that comes from the Big Boxes and the TV shows. Why is the general population so damned gullible.grin
