I need to replace tiles destroyed in the process of replacing the pan.
I have been told that if I am able to get discontinued tiles, the color may not match the existing tiles even if they are the same kind of tiles. For that reason it is necessary to replace all the bathroom tiles.

Am I being given accurate information?

Yes of course it's true. Tiles in service will change some, and there's also a shade variation from batch to batch. However, since you're going the repair route, I'm surprised you care that much. That's one reason I refuse to this type of repair.

The end results are not always good, and it costs the customer between $900-1400, and you still have the same old shower.

Most people don't have or can't find old tile anyway. If they do find some from one of the specialty stores, they're likely to pay $20-40 per sq. ft. For tile worth under $2.00.

How old is this shower? If you also have wall tiles on the rest of the walls, sounds like it could be over 40 years or older.

If you can find the same tile today it most likely wont match the old exactly in color shade or sizing. The variation could be minimal or it could be severe depending on the manufacturer's practices in producing tile runs. Much the same thing exists in wallpaper too I am told.

If you can live with the variations it is not imperative that the old tile all be removed. Technically, a new tile next to an old one will have no difference in performance. Its the look that you will have to make the decision on.

Take the old tile out up to a point then use a totally different tile and make it a design feature. You're waisting your time trying to match what's there. A diliberate tile change looks a whole lot better than a sorry mismatch.grin
