I had custom tile made in Portugal 15 years ago. It was installed as a backsplash (two rows of 5 1/2 inch sqaure tiles) right on top of a plain primed drywall. Can I remove the tiles for reinstallation without damage? Any hints?

Highly unlikely.

Cut the grout out of a few joints probably verticle. Remove the entire piece of drywall and tile as one piece and then remove the drywall from the tile. It is a typical demo, you are just being more careful. Once you get behind the drywall you should be good. Go slow it can be done.

Once you get all the tiles and drywall off in a single I think soaking the whole thing in a tub of water will dissolve the drywall and perhaps loosen the mortar/adhesive too.
