Aloha,

Does anyone have any advice for removing a black waterproofing membrane from concrete? We have used a sander, sealer&adhesive remover, hammer&chisel, grinder (with a variety of wheels). The sander seemed to work the best--Jasco sealer&adhesive remover worked OK but didn't get it all off, chisel worked but was very slow.

The membrane is located under our washer, in the bathroom and in the kitchen. Any advice is appreciated. We are trying to retile our entire apartment and the concrete prep is taking quite a bit of time.

Thanks!

Where are you?

You may be barking up the wrong tree using chemicals and may have closed your opportunity to install tile over that surface.

Those type of coatings must be mechanically removed by shot-blasting, sand-blasting, grinding and such.

Once chemicals are used bonding issues are created.grin

We are grinding it down with a 16 grit wheel which worked OK. We have 90% of it off and now we are looking at self-levelers or patching. Since there are some low dips all around I think we are going to self level. I'm also looking into using the Redguard as a waterproofing membrane.

Again thanks for the advice! As you might have guessed we are retiling a condo in Waikiki.
