Kitchen Backsplash over Vinyl Wallcovering

I'm looking to tile a kitchen backsplash but the existing wall is drywall with vinyl covering over it. Can I just use a 1/4" (or less) backerboard over that and tile as you would over normal drywall?

It would be faster, cheaper, easier and better to remove the wallcovering.
