I picked up this product at Home Depot to use as an alternative to using backerboard mainly because it appears to be easier to install as the backing is adhesive.

The contractor I have scheduled to put this tile in is wondering if the vinyl flooring underneath requires removal before installing Ceramic Tile? Now, after reading the posts here, I'm wondering if I need the EasyMat at all. Any advice?

If the vinyl is a "full Bond" and in good condition just rough up the surface. Damp mop to remove the dust and go. If it is a perimeter bond remove completely. What is under the vinyl Wood? Concrete? The EasyMat is an alternative to backerboard over wood. It is also a creck isolation where ever you ust it. The sound reduction is an IIC or impact insulation. The best feature is that it is a bonded system not one that un couples.

If you are over concrete you can rough up the vinyl and go right over that. Abe sure to use a good quality TS. FlexBond would be a great choice.

The EasyMat is an alternative to backerboard over wood? The description states in the first sentence that it is a versatile mat underlayment for setting tile and stone over any acceptable subfloor.

But if I don't need to use it at all that would be a great thing. My floor is fully bonded and I think it is over concrete. I'll need to verify that. Thank You for the information Joe.

Holy Freaking Orange Apron Nonsense.

George, Remove the vinyl. Better yet, Get someone to set your tile that isn't "wondering" if you need to remove the vinyl.

Now what's under that vinyl, a wood framed structure or a slab? Is there a basement or crawl space under? That would indicate a wood framed structure. If it's the upper floor of a condo or high rise, it might be lightweight concrete, which is an entirely different animal.

Don't thank Joe, he doesn't know what he speaks of, at all.

Was that unclear?

12000 sq ft of EasyMat personally installed (this year), I'm somewhat familiar with the product. grin Maybe my explanation was not in full comprehensive thoughts, sorry I answered the post between phone calls. I'll strive to encompass all of the posibilities in the future. Bljack Read the data page carefully or get someone to read it to you, before you cast a stone.

Joe, what kind of vinyl is this? Could it be cushion-backed? How would that affect your answer?

Cushion Backed is unacceptable in any case. Must be removed. How much cushion backed have you seen? I've seen very little, I actually thought it was a myth for the first couple of years.
